about

It has been ascertained by a higher authority that there are inconsistencies between the actual structures on the island and those that have been registered according to the by now out-of-date building regulations.

In order to align the island with the image of the island in the archives, which is what is real, we propose these new classifications for its buildings, effective immediately: the buildings that change when night falls; the houses that become museums when their occupants are away; the apartment blocks that would collapse if only once by chance they were left completely empty even for one second; the structures so old that their purpose is now completely unknown; the houses that in dream acquire new wings and rooms; the buildings that have infinite basements; the towers whose every stone has been replaced in the passage of the centuries; pavilions so modern they would move a queen to vomit, if queens were still suffered to exist; quays so long that dwarf the island itself; amphitheaters designed for an infinite troupe with an audience of one; the houses that not only will admit a naked woman but also revere her; the houses that go mad with loneliness; the houses that year after year turn into useless labyrinths; the houses that are too big even though small; the penthouses that have secret rooms that no one alive knows how to access anymore; the balconies over the moat; the brothels that function as a substitute for revelation; the municipal archives that should have been burned down; the municipal archives that have burned down; the unused wings of the palace of a departed queen; the houses that decay like fruit left in the sun; the networks of vine-covered corridors in the huge garden; the houses that lose all meaning after an unexpected departure; the buildings that don’t stay faithful.

According to the new legislation, all structures on the island should conform with the new classifications or be torn down, because what is the purpose of a building
other than to provide a place
with a kind of very
slow memory?
